Treatment and Prevention ServicesSince its inception, BCADA has been the community’s first ‘port-of-call’ and first line of defense in dealing with the complex issues of substance abuse and psychopathology. To this day, BCADA remains the only agency of its kind that offers treatment and prevention services to the community. Our professional staff directly provides individual, group, and family counseling on a regular basis for approximately 200 people each year. It has been our experience that dealing with people only in individual sessions is not adequate in many cases because this process does not take into account the other social systems (i.e. school, community and family) with which our clients interact. Therefore, the focus of BCADA’s program is both the individual and his/her environment. At our clinic, individual, group, and family counseling focus on clients who are substance abusers, significant others, and those who are involved in "at risk" behaviors. As part of our community outreach, BCADA also provides Rap Groups for seventh and eighth graders in the Middle School as well as Rap Groups for parents on both elementary and secondary levels. These groups are coordinated and facilitated by a BCADA social worker. In this way BCADA hopes to pave the way for parents and youngsters to learn skills for coping with problems before these problems evolve into crises. On site, BCADA also provides a ten-week Chemical Education Workshop, a twelve-week Anger Management Workshop, a Women’s Group, a Relapse Prevention Group, and a Transition Group, just to name a few. The Chem Ed series is especially mandated for all clients who have been referred by the Criminal Justice System for some sort of substance related charge. BCADA offers services in two modalities - Treatment and Prevention. TREATMENT: Clients seen in this modality are either currently using substances and attempting to stop, are new to the recovery process, are struggling to maintain their sobriety, or are the significant others of substance abusers. Our focus with the first three categories is to bring about reduction and then cessation of substance abuse. We then attempt to reinforce relapse prevention strategies. Our focus with significant others is to help them find ways of coping and/or dealing with the effects they are experiencing due to the substance issues of those close to them. Individual, group and family counseling are offered. We also strongly recommend that the individual actively participate in AA/NA or AlAnon/NarAnon in conjunction with the treatment they receive at BCADA.
PREVENTION: Clients seen in this modality are not directly involved with substance use. Rather, these clients are exhibiting “acting out” behaviors as a result of emotional crises and difficulty in dealing with daily life stressors. Some are living in an environment where those around them are using substances. BCADA’s focus is to intervene at a sufficiently early stage so as to lessen the possibility of “at-risk” behaviors. Intervention is in the form of individual, group and family counseling for youngsters and adults to reinforce positive coping skills and thus, prevent the onset of substance use or abuse.
